I was honoured to be invited to design a piece for this very special collaboration.  Please have a look at the links below see all the pieces from “The Sugar Skull Bakers”

Dia de los Muertos tradition honored by Cake Decorators

The Sugar Skull Bakers – a group collaboration of cookie, sugar, cake decorators, and artists from around the world. For its third year the group brings its tradition to life with a beautifully curated collection of sweets honoring the 3500 year old Mexican holiday – Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.

Our group, founded in 2013, by cake artist Berenice “Berry” Rabago, of Berry’s Sweet Studio and graphic artist Yuk…i Navarro, in Mexico City, MX. Each member was invited to join based on their admiration for calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls).

“This is my idea just to have a lot of bakers make a Dia de los muertos cake to share on 1st of November, DAY OF THE DEAD!” It’s just a fun page … no hurry, no worries just SKULLS. No blood, no gore. It’s to remember and to celebrate our beloved.” Berry Rabago

Title ” Flores para los muertos”
“Prior to undertaking this design, I only had a vague understanding of the ‘Day of the Dead’. I found the captivating colours, intricate designs and symbolism to be enthralling. A poster for the festival depicting a lady sparked my inspiration. Using the community and family aspects of the festival, I decided to incorporate a little girl to represent my love for my four year old girl. There is a clear unity and independence evident in both characters, and this is what I desire for our future together: two strong and loving ladies.”

Dahlia’s jungle cake

November 18th, 2014 | Posted by webadmin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Dahlia’s jungle cake)

Another first birthday cake this time for Dahlia. I am in love with the name Dahlia! The brief for this cake was a jungle themed cake with an elephant on top. I love making kiddies cakes especially making little animal characters. I took my inspiration from this picture from the jungle book. The cake was airbrushed first (Any excuse to use it these days) and then I added jungle leaves and foliage made from sugarpaste  to give a multi textured effect. At the last minute I thought something was missing so I made a little Dahlia flower for the Baby elephant to carry.

Imogen’s duck picnic party

November 18th, 2014 | Posted by webadmin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Imogen’s duck picnic party)

‘What better way to celebrate your first birthday than a picnic with your friends and some rubber duck cupcakes….

Imogen’s mum really wanted to make Imogens first birthday cake and she did a great job but she also ordered some cupcakes to match as Imogen loves rubber duckies.  As a surprise her Dad also ordered  a cake as he was away and  he couldn’t make it to the party. He was really gutted and wanted to feel a part of it so  I made a special cake from him.

The result; a lot of cake and a lot of ducks!

Halloween

November 11th, 2014 | Posted by webadmin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Halloween)

I made this Halloween Pumpkin cake from rice krispie treat. I sculpted it by hand covered it in Sugarpaste and then airbrushed it. I taught the class at the British School Jakarta and the students loved all the different stages of the creative process.

This figurine is inspired by my daughter at Halloween – the wonder of everything around her.

Here is a picture tutorial on making marshmallow pops. These are great fun to make with your kids. I made mine with my 3 1/2 year old daughter Sophie. She absolutely loved making them . She is slightly obsessed with princesses  so we had to make crowns for some!

Turtle Class BIS Week 4&5

October 23rd, 2014 | Posted by webadmin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Turtle Class BIS Week 4&5)

We worked creating our baby turtles over 3 weeks ( 40 minutes class).  They looked amazing when finished.
The skills the students learned were: covering a cake board, sugarcraft modelling, hand painting cakes, airbrushing and using candy moulds. Not bad for beginners!

Holidays in Dublin!

August 22nd, 2014 | Posted by webadmin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Holidays in Dublin!)

I am back from my hometown of Dublin and had an amazing holiday.  As well as catching up with family and friends my trip home was also to get my fix of cake decorating and sugarcraft by doing some workshops and classes.  I completed a two day flower class  where I learned how to make a “David Austen” rose and  a beautiful lilly. The class was with
CakeVirtuosoStudio. Natalia is a very talented lady and great teacher. I was delighted with the results they look so real.
